Two days later I receive the phone call I’d been dreading. Roger invited Josh to attend a meeting of “The Silver Bullets,” and the meeting is this evening.

“We need to meet with him before he goes,” Viktor reminds me when I relay the information to him.

“I told him we’d be there in an hour to brief him and give him the earpiece. He’s waiting for us in my room at the dorm.”

“You’re one step ahead of me.” He smiles.

A million sarcastic responses fill my mind, but I decide to behave and keep them inside. An hour later, we step into my room and find Josh asleep on the bed. “Josh,” I whisper.

“I’m up!” He jumps out of bed with a startle.

“It’s just me. We brought you a few things.” Josh looks between me and Viktor. “This is Viktor. He’s my…friend.”

“Are you a vampire?” Josh asks.

Viktor looks at me before answering. “I am.”

Josh sticks his hand out, ready to shake Viktor’s. “It’s nice to meet you, Viktor.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, too.” Viktor pulls the earpiece out of his pocket, handing it to Josh. “This won’t be visible to anyone.”

Josh slides it into his ear. “What it’s for?”

“It allows us to hear you. If you get into trouble or need help, we will come immediately.”

“Pick a code word.” I pull his hair around in front of his ear, making sure the small piece of plastic is completely invisible.

“A code word?”

“If you need help, you work the word into the conversation. It tells us you need help. You can’t use hamburger. It’s already taken.” I smile remembering the emoji Viktor sent.

“Okay, gosh. Does it have to be food?”

I laugh. “No. It’s whatever word you want. Don’t make it too hard to work into a sentence, though.”

“Spiderman,” Josh answers. “My code word is Spiderman.”

Viktor slides a similar earpiece into his own ear. “This allows me to hear everything.” Josh nods, understanding.

“I’m not sure what to expect,” he admits.

I sigh. “It’s going to be super awkward and weird. I felt like I was in the middle of a movie set or something.”

“Keep your head down, and don’t draw attention to yourself,” Viktor adds.

“So, in other words, be me.” He takes a deep breath. “I’m going to go downstairs and meet Roger. He thinks I’m at the library, studying. Truthfully, I didn’t want to stay in the room with him any more than I had to.”

“Where’s the meeting?” I ask.

“Oh, sorry. I guess that would help.” He pulls out his phone and reads the address to me.

“We’ll be right behind you,” Viktor reassures him. “If at any time you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to use the code word.”

Josh nods, heading toward the door. “Josh?” I call. “Don’t tell anyone what you’re doing. No matter how much you think you can trust them.” He nods and leaves the room.

“What are you thinking?” Viktor asks once Josh is out of earshot.

“I’m thinking he’s sweet, innocent, and naive. Their perfect recruit.”

“Agreed. Let’s go. I don’t want something to happen to him.
